DURANGO, Colo. (KRQE) - The La Plata County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting death that happened early Saturday morning at a remote campsite outside Durango, Colo.

Around 2 a.m. someone called 911 reporting the shooting on Missionary Ridge about four miles north of Henderson Lake.

When deputies arrived, they were directed to another campsite where they found David Jones, 26, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Jones, from Woods Cross, Utah, was a student at Fort Lewis College in Durango and was camping with a friend, investigators said.

After conducting interviews deputies arrested Brenden Dow Ashburn and recovered what is believed to be the murder weapon.

He was jailed without bond in the La Plata County Detention Center pending his arraignment on a charge of first-degree murder.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, and there are no additional suspects in the case, according to a statement released by the sheriff's office.

Investigators said there were at least three separate campsites in the area, which is a popular camping area although not a developed campground.
