HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) - A Hobbs man is facing charges after he allegedly burglarized a doctor's home and then demanded a ransom for the loot.

Police say last month Jason Smith, 24, broke into the doctor's home and stole TVs, pistols and personal information.

Smith allegedly left a note behind that said he would return the items if the doctor paid him.

Over the next few weeks, according to police, Smith called and sent texts to the doctor who eventually agreed to pay more than $500 to get his stuff back.

Smith was arrested Saturday after police got a hold of his cell phone records and is now charged with extortion.
