ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - An Arizona man convicted of raping a woman in her home on the Navajo Indian Reservation has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
New Mexico U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales announced the sentencing Thursday of 29-year-old Derrick Ivan Jim on two counts of aggravated sexual abuse. Jim will have to register as a sex offender and be on supervised release for five years after he serves his sentence.
Jim, of Red Valley, Ariz., was accused of following a college student into her Fruitland, N.M., home in August 2010 and locking the door before raping her.
Authorities say Jim retracted an admission of guilt he made in court and has said the encounter with the victim was consensual.
