ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A man who police say was arrested earlier this week accused of raping and beating one of his male neighbors back in January, is facing additional charges.

Santos Torres, 41, is also a suspect in a burglary case, in which he is facing two burglary charges and tampering with evidence.

Police identified him Friday as the suspect in the rape and murder of Fred Chavez, 45.

Chavez was found beaten and barely alive in a northeast Albuquerque apartment complex parking lot January 24th.

He died days later at UNM Hospital, where it was also discovered he had been raped.

Police say a trail of blood from the spot where Chavez was discovered led to the apartment belonging to Santos Torres.

It is still unclear what may have led to the rape and murder.

Torres' bond was increased to $100,000 cash only.
