ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A busy Albuquerque west side street looked more like a demolition derby Wednesday morning as one driver began recklessly plowing into other cars.
Police have identified the suspect as 40-year-old Alphonso Martin and say it appears he was driving drunk.
It was shortly before 8 a.m. when police were able to stop and arrest him near Unser and Tierra Pintada, north of I-40.
Police were called out there after they say Martin struck at least two cars, possibly three, while going south on Unser.
Luckily, none of the other drivers were seriously hurt.
At least one was treated at the scene.
Martin himself was taken by police to the hospital.
Investigators suspect he had been drinking and they've ordered a blood test to confirm it.
Martin was convicted of DWI back in 2006.
Police say he was driving on a suspended or revoked license when they stopped him this morning, near a group of neighborhoods packed with children heading to school.
”It's just very frightening, you have children walking across crosswalks, bus stops to get to school at this time of the morning,” Officer Tasia Martinez said. “It’s very frightening to think about what a driver in his condition and driving as recklessly as he was could've accomplished.”
Online public records show a slew of other charges related to Martin going back to 1991 including burglary, shoplifting and domestic violence.
Police are waiting on the outcome of Martin's blood test to see if he will be charged with DWI in this morning incident.
