ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A unique court that helps Albuquerque’s homeless break the cycle of crime is celebrating Thursday.

Homeless Court has been in Albuquerque for 10 years.

The court accepts non-violent offenders where their crimes are related to their homelessness, such as loitering or illegal panhandling.

Volunteer attorneys and probation officer work with individuals to help them locate resources such as mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment or medical help.

“The people come out of homeless court stronger better productive citizens ready to reengage with society,” Judge Benjamin Chavez said.

Homeless court also helps clients find housing and a steady stream of income.
