ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Dona Ana County Commissioners have unanimously signed off on a state bill that would restrict space travelers' right to sue certain contractors in most cases of injury or death.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports the item passed Tuesday on the consent agenda.
A proposal for the 2012 state legislative session would limit lawsuits against manufacturers and suppliers of spacecraft.
Virgin Galactic intends to operate flights from Spaceport America in Sierra County and already has state protection from most lawsuits.
Backers of the bill argue it's needed to keep the spaceport north of Dona Ana County competitive with three other aerospace-focused states that have already OK'd similar measures.
