Propane short; emergency declared

SANTA FE (KRQE) - A regional shortage of propane spiked by frigid temperatures has prompted Gov. Susana Martinez to declare an emergency.

The official declaration suspends regulations on the number of continuous hours a propane delivery driver can work.  The order is expected to expedite the delivery of LPG--liquified petroleum gas--into and across the state, according to the governor's office.

Federal law allows governors to suspend hours-of-service limits for motor carriers for up to 30 days in emergencies.

Martinez issued a similar declaration nearly two years ago when record low temperatures across the Southwest led to the shutdown of gas pipelines feeding New Mexico suppliers and consumers.

The governor's statement also encourage residents needing assistance with cold-weather issues that are not emergencies to call regular police and fire phone numbers rather than tie up 911 emergency dispatchers.
