Copper theft cuts phones in western N.M.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The theft of copper wire may be behind an extensive phone outage from Grants to Gallup, a spokesman for CenturyLink has told KRQE News 13.

The outage began about 3:30 p.m. Thursday with trouble reports coming in from Gallup, Grants and Laguna and Acoma pueblos, the spokesman said.

News 13 also received a report of ATM machines and debit- and credit-card readers not working.

Shortly before 6 p.m. CenturyLink reported its field crew found a pole with copper grounding wire removed and a section of buried fiber-optic cable exposed by a washout also cut.

The metal thieves likely mistook the fiber cable for more copper, the spokesman said.

Critical circuits including 911 emergency services are on a redundant radio-backup system, he added.

As of 7 p.m. service had yet to be restored.
