AG opposing Four Corners gas cutoff

N.M. Gas Company ending service to 71 customers

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico's attorney general is trying to stop plans to cut off gas supplies to some customers in the Four Corners region at the end of September.

The Farmington Daily Times reports Attorney General Gary King has asked the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission to stop New Mexico Gas Company from cutting service to 71 customers in San Juan County.

King spokesman Phil Sisneros says the company violated state law by not hosting abandonment hearings prior to informing customers that natural gas services were going to be canceled.

The gas company told 71 affected customers it would pay them up to $5,000 to help convert to either propane or electric heat.

That's nowhere near enough for some customers, especially hotels that need to convert heaters in each room.
