Medals awarded 91-year-old veteran

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - More than six decades after World War II ended, a New Mexico veteran has been recognized for his service.
Wilson Halona, a native of Tohatchi in northwestern New Mexico, received five medals during a ceremony at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center Tuesday.
Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., got to do the honors.
During Halona's time in battle his battalion defeated German bunkers at Utah Beach on D-Day in 1944 and guarded Adolf Hitler's top generals after Germany surrendered.
Halona received the Good Conduct Medal, Silver Service Star, World War II Victory Medal, Honorable Service lapel button and the sharpshooter badge
"I'm just only one individual," he said. "It's going 91 years that I'm alive today."
Halona fought in World War II from 1943 to 1945.
