CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) - The already booming town of Clovis is about to get even bigger.

The commander at Cannon Air Force Base announced Monday that it will increase personnel by 1,100 in the coming months.

The base currently employees 5,300 people. That number is expected to jump to 6,400.

Col. David Piech said the jump comes as part of Cannon's new mission.

Because of the increase some base housing will transition into civilian housing on Aug. 14.

Piech also said there are nine construction projects in the works on the base to help accommodate the growth.
