Make It: Festive Fall Felt Wreath

Seasonal décor for your home can’t be left out of the picture. Creating your own DIY designs for the fall season is your best bet for making your home stand out. Front door wreaths have become year-round in some places, but really begin popping up in fall. Straw, autumn leaves, berries, anything pumpkin-themed appear on entryways everywhere.

Be different. And be evergreen, by making your own wreath drawing in more modern looks with materials you can either switch out or put away for another time after the season ends.

A simple foam ring wrapped in ribbon is a perfect idea. Add some easy, handmade felt flowers, felt leaves and a few simple stitches and you’ve got a one-of-a-kind look that greets your guests with a visually-stunning welcome.

Festive Fall Felt Wreath

What you’ll need:

• Foam ring – (I used a 16” diameter ring – you can choose your size)
• 12-15 pieces of felt for flowers, leaves in different shades
• Tracing paper/pencil for drawing out leaf pattern
• Embroidery thread, different colors
• Embroidery needle
• Straight pins – regular silver and decorative
• 24 yards of 2” ribbon, your choice, pattern

 

1: Start by wrapping your foam ring with the ribbon, overlapping the ribbon edges to make sure your ring is covered.

2: Secure the end on the back of the wreath with a straight pin and wherever else you feel it necessary for a little extra hold. When you get back to where you started, pin the ends with 2-3 pins to hold the ribbon in place. Set aside and create your flowers and leaves.

3: If you are going to create leaves, you can print out this article with my provided leaf pattern.

4: Use your pattern to cut out your leaves in several colors. You can go all fall colors – oranges, browns, yellows – or you can go your own way with reds, blues, purples. This same color scheme idea goes for felt flowers as well. You can leave them blank or you can stitch veins into the flowers for a more visually striking design. Use a running stitch for this.

5: Make your flowers. The easiest flower to make is the concentric circle flower. You can use all one color or several, but cut out 3 or so circles, each a little bit smaller than the last. Your largest should be about 3-4” in diameter.

6: Place the largest circle on the bottom and stack largest to smallest. Use a simple “X” stitch to hold the circles together.

7: For ones with “petals”, cut simple scallop circles, and repeat the stacked process, stitching in the middle with an “X” to hold together.

8: A little more detailed, but you can create mum-type flowers by cutting a strip about 1” wide and the length of a piece of felt – about 12”. Fold and stitch the two sides together with a simple running stitch.

9: Snip small cuts into the folded side about ¼ of an inch and about ¼ of inch apart. Roll up with the sewn side down and sew a seam through the bottom to keep the felt together. Fluff out the loops you cut and you’ve got a nice little mum-type flower.

10. Once you have your leaves and flowers made, place them on your wreath where you’d like and pin with decorative straight pins.

You can completely cover the wreath if you like with flowers or place your design on one side.
