Locals honor 9/11 anniversary

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - New Mexicans are coming together Tuesday to remember the events that took place eleven years ago on September 11th.

First responders, churches and the community are each hosting events to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the terror attacks in New York City and Pennsylvania.

Albuquerque Police and Fire Fighters hosted a memorial ceremony at the new fire station near Gibson and I-25. Those officers raised the flag for the very first time Tuesday morning in honor of those who died.

Governor Martinez and Albuquerque Mayor RJ Berry were at that event.

In Downtown Albuquerque firefighters climbed 110 flights of stairs in full gear at the Bank of Albuquerque building. That is the height of the twin towers.

Firefighters say the annual tradition helps them put the day into perspective.

Albuquerque is also honored to have one of the cross beams from the Twin Towers at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church downtown . The Parrish is open to the public and will be celebrating mass Tuesday at 6 p.m.

There is also an event at 6 p.m. in Rio Rancho Tuesday. That event will take place at the Vista Verde Memorial Park off Sara Road. Sandoval County Fire Chief Jon Tibbets, who died in a car accident in July will also be honored at the event.
