Question submitted 11/30/2010:
I had a couple old fillings replaced a couple months ago. Ever since, when I floss between those teeth, I get a zap of pain from my tooth. Is it possible the filling isn't right between those teeth? or is it just sensitive since it's new?
Answer from Martin G Goebbel, DDS:
It is possible that the filling isn't right, but that is unlikely. Some sensitivity may be the result of having the new filling placed. If the filling was between the teeth, the gum may have been irritated during the filling procedure. If this is the case, maintaining excellent oral hygiene (including brushing the area well, flossing the area well, and rinsing with warm salt water [1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of water]4-5 times a day for a few days) will allow the gum to recover and the sensitivity will subside.
