KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Fire Department rescue crews have halted a nearly two-hour search of the frigid Missouri River near downtown Kansas City after a witness reported seeing two people jump from a highway bridge into the water.

Fire department spokesman James Garrett says the witness reported seeing two people jump from the Bond Bridge on Thursday morning. He says three fire department boats began scouring the river before noon and estimated the distance from the bridge to the water is equivalent to "at least four to five stories."

Deputy Chief Jeff Grote says the search was called off after about an hour and 45 minutes after no bodies were found. He says given the distance of the fall and the hazardous wintry conditions recovery of the bodies was unlikely.
