Man in Pa. store standoff displayed nonworking gun

FAIRLESS HILLS, Pa. (AP) — Police say a suicidal man who barricaded himself inside the bathroom of an eastern Pennsylvania sporting goods store after forcing a clerk to give him a shotgun initially had a gun that didn't work.

Fifty-eight-year-old Mark McCarty entered a Dick's Sporting Goods store in Fairless Hills on Saturday and asked to see a shotgun and ammunition. He then pulled out a handgun, which police now say was 105 years old and nonworking, and ordered the worker to undo the shotgun's gun lock.

Falls Township police Lt. Hank Ward tells The (Doylestown) Intelligencer (http://bit.ly/Yb3vGr ) that McCarty's gun was so old, there's no ammunition available for it and the gun "wouldn't work."

McCarty fatally shot himself after a four-hour-long standoff.

The store and nearby businesses were evacuated, but nobody else was hurt.
